The Art of Crokinole

CROKINOLE

SET UP

  • The game requires a tabletop and chairs.

  • 1 x Tournament sized Crokinole board.

  • 24 x Tournament sized Crokinole discs. (12 of each color)

  • 1 x 100 point score disc

  • 1 x hammer token

  • Gliss powder, a.k.a. shuffleboard wax. (optional)

  • The game starts as an open field.

  • Each player pulls their disc off the board, (not placed in the gutter)

  • the Hammer disc is used to randomly determine the first player (who gets the honors). The Hammer token is placed in the gutter in front of the last player to shoot, ( it is essentially the dealer button). The Hammer will get the last unanswered shot.

  • Game play moves clockwise.

  • Play with etiquette, players should remain off/not touching the board when another player is taking their turn.

Number of Players

  • 2 - 4

Objective

  • To be the first to earn a total of 100 points, over the course of one or many rounds of Crokinole.

  • Players take flicking shots from the back line, anywhere within or on their quadrant lines.

Rules

There are only 3 rules in the game of Crokinole. One is a limitation, the other two are about making valid shots.

The 3 rules of Crokinole.

  1. You must be seated. The 1 butt cheek rule applies.

  2. If there are no opponent discs on the board, your disc must land within or touching the pegged 15 point line, to remain on the board.

  3. If any opponent's disc are anywhere on the board, your disc must make contact with it, to remain on the board.

Scoring is determined by the Delta of player/team scores. i.e. at the end of a round, If player 1 had 50 points total, and player 2 had 15 points, then player 1 would score the 35 point difference on the score disc.

Reset the board for play, the hammer token shifts left, and another round of Crokinole continues until one player reaches 100 points to win the full game.

Player Variations

  • Normally played as a 2 player game with 8 shots each, this game has variations for 3 individual, or four players team options with only 6 shots each.

  • Consider the ‘drink’ option for sinking a 20 point shot. (Drink responsibly please.)

  • or playing for stakes. 3 shots [link]

History

  • Crokinole is ~160 year old game out of Canada, that few in the States know about.

  • This game is an absolute jewel for social fun and connection building and belongs in every game friendly bar.

Game Theory / Game Dynamics

  • One of the hardest rules to remember is not leaving or moving your chair. You can perform some interesting chair yoga, but one butt cheek must remain on the stationary seat at all times. In casual play, you might get away with it, but in a tournament setting, it is a penalizing offense.

  • This is a flicking game, not a pushing game. You can try scissor kicks, or ‘Fonzerelli thumb flicks’. Try flicking with different fingers, or your other hand. In a matter of playing just a few games, you will see vast improvement in your flicking abilities, and you will know you had fun when the tip of your finger hurts the next day.

  • The last validation rule makes this game very adversarial. You can’t get mad at your opponent for hitting your disc, that is exactly what they had to do!

  • This game is primed for boasting, and trash talking.

  • Anger and tension gets pointed to ones self for making a bad shot. Anybody has the opportunity to make a great shot, but everyone does make a bad shot.

  • Try it, and you will quickly fall in love with this game.
