the tafl

Hnefatafl is an ancient Nordic and Celtic two-player strategy board game, also known as the "King's Table" or "Viking Chess".

The game is played on a square grid board with two opposing sides: an attacker with more pieces and a defender protecting a central king.

The defender wins if the king reaches one of the four corner squares, while the attacker wins by capturing the king.

“If wolves could play board games, the TAFL would be their hunting grounds.” - dlr

The TAFL is the premier board found on the Predators Tract shelf, and one of the original tavern games from medieval times with a rich history. TAFL translates to ‘Table’ in German. Most commonly used to play Hnefatafl, the ‘Kings Table’, a.k.a. Viking chess, (and my favorite way to play Chess. )

On ancient Viking conquests, they would land on foreign soil, use this board, drawn on an animal skin, and use rocks to plot their next attack, making it one of the original military strategy tools.

Traditionally an 11×11 square grid with markings branded in the 4 corners and center space, the board can be custom made to 7×7, 9×9, or 13×13 sizes. ( parametric pricing @~ $2.00 per square)
